Evander was born on 19 October 1962 in the mill town of Atmore, Alabama. He is the youngest of nine children. Later, the boxer’s family moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where he grew up in the crime-ridden Bowen Homes Housing Projects. Evander began boxing when he was seven and won the Boys Club boxing tournament. 


At 13, he qualified to fight in his first Junior Olympics. In 1977, he became the Southeastern Regional Champion, won the competition, and earned the Best Boxer Award. By age 22, Evander had a record of 160 victories, 14 losses with 76 by knockout.

As an amateur, Evander represented the United States at the 1984 Summer Olympics and won a bronze medal in the light heavyweight division. Evander became a professional boxer at the age of 21. In 1986, he won his first world championship by beating Dwight Muhammad Qawi for the WBA title. Then, he defeated Carlos de León and Ricky Parkey to win the WBC and IBF titles.

In 1988, Evander moved up to heavyweight and defeated Buster Douglas to claim the unified heavyweight titles.
