Ten Hag believes Fernandes should be Man United’s captain

After Manchester United’s 7-0 loss to Liverpool, manager Erik ten Hag has made it clear that Bruno Fernandes will continue to serve as captain of the team in Harry Maguire’s absence.

Ten Hag told reporters on Wednesday, “Yes, definitely,” when asked if Fernandes would continue to lead the team when necessary.

Speaking ahead of Thursday’s first-leg match at Old Trafford against Real Betis, the Dutch manager added, “I think he is playing a brilliant season and he has played a big role in us being where we are.”

“He is correctly running a lot with intensity and giving the team energy. He inspires the entire team by pointing to and coaching players.

“Everyone makes mistakes because no one is perfect. Having Bruno Fernandes in my team and having him as our captain despite Harry’s absence makes me very happy.

Marcus Rashford, a striker for United, endorsed Fernandes as well, describing the midfielder as “the perfect player to play with.”

“He’s been a wonderful leader for us, even when he’s not captain, which is always a positive indication,” Rashford told reporters.

“He has supported other players in developing greater leadership abilities, and the reality of the matter is that we cannot be an organised team if only one leader serves as captain.

“He has given us a lot. Regarding Bruno, I have nothing negative to say. Nobody is perfect, as the manager stated. He has my support and my full backing.”

When Betis, who are fifth in the LaLiga standings with 41 points and have not lost in their last four games, including a 0-0 draw with Real Madrid, host them, Ten Hag urged his players to reset and rebound.

“We do it together because the coach and the players are in the same boat. Together, we win and lose. Ten Hag stated, “We have to deal with the mess we made on Sunday.”

“The defeat taught us many things that will help us in the future. We were clearly below average, especially psychologically.

“You must act differently if we want to win trophies. On Sunday, we learnt an important lesson; now is the time to move on and look ahead. Concentrate all of your energy on the next game.”

For Thursday’s match, Ten Hag’s team will be without Marcel Sabitzer and Anthony Martial, while Donny van de Beek (knee) and Christian Eriksen (ankle) are out for a long time.

In a Wednesday interview, Ten Hag stated to MUTV, “We have a strong program.” However, I believe we are quite good.
