Zohaib has a strong start in the boxing tournament

KARACHI: As the Chairman KPT 40th Men and 4th Women National Boxing Championship began on Thursday at the KPT Sports Complex, Pakistan’s top boxer Zohaib Rasheed won his preliminary round match.

Navy’s Zohaib, who has won two Asian bronze medals in the Under-22 and senior divisions, defeated Pakistan Air Force’s (PAF) Tayyab in the preliminary round to kick off his 46-48 kg journey.

Zohaib, who was born in Lyari, exercised strict control from the outset. He kept his opponent at bay throughout the show with precise footwork.

In the meantime, Tabish of Karachi Port Trust (KPT) defeated Abdul Basit of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the other fight of the same weight class to advance to the next round.

In the same weight class, Balochistan’s Jehanzeb defeated Punjab’s Ahsham to advance to the next round.

Sindh’s Husban defeated Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Aeanullah in 48-51 kg, the PAF’s Amir Hamza defeated Railways’ Usman Zai, and the emerging international Talha of the Army was shocked by Sajid Rasheed of the Navy.

The KPT General Manager (A), Brigadier Tariq Bashir, presided over the event’s formal opening ceremony earlier. He said the championship started. Khalid Mehmood, president of the Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF), Col Nasir Tung, secretary of the PHF, Haider Hussain, and KPT Manager Sports Major (retd) Mehmood Riaz were also in attendance.

There are up to 135 male boxers competing in 13 weight classes, and there are 40 female boxers competing in seven weight classes. KPT is organizing the event, which will conclude on March 14, after 28 long years.

The best lot for the national team camp will be selected by the PBF selection committee during the event. After this event, the Pakistan squad will begin preparing for the Asian Games this year.

The competitions include the armed forces, the four provinces, WAPDA, the railways, the KPT, the police, the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Islamabad, and AJK.
