Early Life and Education

On December 5, 1982, Keri Hilson was born in Decatur, Georgia. Keri spent most of her teenage years producing songs and singing for several artists. She has three siblings: Kelsee, Kaycee, and Kye Hilson. After attending Tucker High School in the DeKalb County School District, Kery went to Oxford College of Emory University. Later, she attended Emory University in Atlanta to study theatre. Keri grew up in a modest middle-class family and an African-American neighborhood. At the age of 12, her dream of being a musician began. She strived to be a musician after watching Showtime in the Apollo and Star Search. Then her mother hired her a piano teacher; however, Kery wanted to become a singer and therefore “converted those sessions into vocal lessons, following the teacher on the piano.” By 14, Kery had secured a record deal with the girl group D’Signe, who later disbanded.

Kery’s first official work as a songwriter was “Jump,” written for a Japanese R&B singer Michico’s debut album I Do (2002). Kery spent most of her teenage years working with producer Anthony Dent as a songwriter and background vocalist for Usher, Ludacris, Kelly Rowland, Toni Braxton, Ciara, and Polow da Don. In 2006, Polow introduced Hilson to American rapper and producer Timbaland, who signed her to Mosley Music Group’s record label. While with ‘The Clutch’ group, Kery created songs like “Ice Box” by Omarion and “Like a Boy” by Ciara. The group comprises Keri, Belewa Muhammad, Patrick J. Que Smith, Dg Nelson, and Ezekiel Lewis. Her album, “In a Perfect World,” had six singles: “Energy,” “Return the Favor,” “Slow Dance,” “Turnin’ Me On,” “Knock You Down,” and “Make Love,” which received the Gold certification from RIAA. This album made her net worth shoot to the stars. She gained fame because of her hard work and exceptional pieces. Keri has been a prominent artist in countless albums and has featured in many other videos. In Addition, she has had other breakthroughs like a deal with Camel Lights and Essence.
