Wasim Akram advises over-50s to cut back on phone use

Former Pakistan cricket captain and fast bowler Wasim Akram has advised people over 50 to cut back a little on their mobile phone use, so they can spend quality time with loved ones and focus on a healthy lifestyle.
In a video shared on Instagram, the former cricketer released a special message for people his age. He laid out a few guidelines he has put together on the responsible use of mobile phones, WhatsApp and social media.
Addressing those over 50, Akram urged them to avoid sending others a stream of messages and content every day without a reason. He said this can annoy recipients, fill up their phone storage and force them to look at unnecessary messages.
Expressing displeasure at pointless messages, especially “good morning” and “good night” greetings, he said people’s attention spans are getting shorter. He also advised against sending long videos.
“Who would want to watch a half-hour video?” Akram asked. He said it makes no difference how important a video is, because nobody will watch it, so people should not send videos longer than two minutes. He added that those who follow his advice will thank him later.
The former captain acknowledged that constant phone use may be normal for Generation Alpha and Generation Z, who grew up in the digital age. Older people, he said, do not need to be available on their phones at all times.
Drawing on his own experience, Akram said he too used to spend time on his phone, sharing reels and replying to messages, but kept his use within limits.
Shaniera Akram responds
Akram’s Australian-born wife, Shaniera Akram, responded with a video of her own. In a lighthearted tone, she said people under 50 can carry on sending messages. In the Instagram video, she told viewers to listen up: if you are under 50, keep sending messages.
